Hedgehogs can be a wonderfully interesting and interactive exotic pet, but they are not for everyone so please do your research before bringing one into your home to be a part of your family.

Some people will tell you that hedgehogs are a low maintenance pet that requires little interaction - this is true if you are interested in a slightly huffy, prickly, really cool conversation piece. Their care is in fact relatively simple, but they are still an exotic pet and your care regimen must be abided closely for the safety of the hedgehogs and to give you the best chance of a long life together. They can be more fragile than they may seem at first glance.

If you tend to like your house particularly cool then a hedgehog will not do well without supplemental heat. If you are interested in using a cheap low quality cat food to keep costs down then a hedgehog may not have the health and longevity it should have.

If you are willing to cater to some basic needs, like a warm spot that is kept at an absolute MINIMUM of 72 degrees, (this is an absolute must!) and purchase high quality foods and insects, and if you are willing to spend the time interacting and socializing your hedgehog so that it is comfortable with people, then you are on the right track to a long, fun trip into hedgehog ownership.
